ELEPHANT SOUNDSYSTEM presents OXMAN
Elephant Sounds is a rollin'!. After a few stints in Alkmaar and Deventer we are now checking into the Ekko and Rotown venues for our very first Elephant Soundsystem special:
We are very proud to present: Oxman! This London based Jamaican dj/toaster started out at an early age boosting up his mothers 'South London Blues Parties' which were legendary at the time. These parties gave him enough credit to join the "Calla Hi Soundsystem" in 1976. Calla was one of the first soundsystems to play with two decks, instead of one, and to fully adopt juggling: a style of deejaying wherein you mix one riddim into another. Indeed: a form of mixing you can still enjoy at a regular Elephant Sound party. After "Calla" Oxman joined Manasseh in 1981 and later on left them to assist Dave Rodigan on both decks and mic. But most of you will recognize Ox as the mc of the Souljazz Soundsystem who succesfully played the Helling a couple of times and with whom he's constantly touring the world. Being a man who can't sit still in his spare time, he decided to set up his own label called "Dill-Ox" records, releasing killer tunes for artists like Chezidek, Prince Malachi and Daville, and compiled the SoulJazz compilation "Studio One Lovers" for which he also wrote the liner notes. Thus proving that he's a man who knows his past but is also way on top of current events.
The Elephants will be playin with and alongside Ox and the entrance fee is also Elephant stylee: 5 euro's in Utrecht and 4 in Rotterdam. Swing by!

R.I.P. JOSEPH HILL
Reggae legend and Culture frontman Jospeh Hill is no longer with us. Joseph suddenly took ill and passed away in Berlin Germany on the morning of August 19, 2006 while the group were in the middle of a European tour. Hill (born: January 22, 1949) enjoyed a lengthy career in reggae music and will be greatly missed by both fans and peers. The group plans to finish its current European tour and honor all other commitments with Joseph's son Kenyatta standing in on lead vocals as a tribute to his father. In coming days additional information will be posted on this website and Culture's website and Guestbook entries can be made here

REGGAE GEEL, DA CLASSIC FEST CHECK IT!
De Congos zijn naar beste Jamaicaanse traditie een vocaal trio, maar ééntje van mythische proporties. Het bestaat uit Cedryc Milton (falset), Roydel”CongoAshanti” Roy (tenor) en Watty Burnett (bariton). Hun “The heart of the Congoes“ is een mijlpaal buiten categorie en misschien wel één de beste elpees tout court. Deze Lee Perry productie is een onaards mooie mix van experiment en melodieuze songs met als kers op de taart de hemelse samenzang van de drie Rasta's. De Congos zijn weer herenigd en dat is waar alle reggaeliefhebbers op zaten te wachten, vooral omdat ze na 15 jaar voor het eerst in originele bezetting aan treden.
Met dj's als Tappa Zukie schakelt de kunst van het toasten een paar versnellingen hoger en wordt zelfs militant. Zukie's ding is rauw en energiek en heeft als decor de beste King Tubby's dubs. Kortom de Sizzla van de jaren zeventig. Zukie is de lieveling van Patti Smith waarmee hij wel eens optreedt en die later zijn debuut “Man A Warrior “ zal heruitgeven.
Linval Thompson is één van de goed bewaarde geheimen van de reggae. Hij maakt hits a volonté zoals “Dont cut of your dreadlocks”,” Six Babylon” In eigen beheer” brengt hij “I love Marihuana ” uit. Dit zet hem ook op de kaart als producer en zo blijkt uit heruitgaven, met een vette catalogus wat dat betreft.
Buro Banton is dé originele Banton en blueprint voor de monderne dj's met schuurpapier en geluid. Hij was dé inspiratiebron voor ene Mark Myrie of Buju Banton die zich als eerbetoon naar hem noemt. Hij is nog ééntje die het vak the hard way leerde, avond na avond chattend, op de top soundsystems van het eiland zoals Volcano. Buro is dan ook bij uitstek een live-artiest, met een beresterke reputatie.
Tristan Palmer is één van die lekkere stemmen waarop ze down a yard het patent blijken te hebben. Om de vingers bij af te likken. Rub a dub is aan de orde van de dag en Tristan Palmer is de meester van de singjay stijl, een delicatesse. Zijn stem siert hits als : “Entertainement”, “Joker Smoker” en “Run around woman”.
Cornel Campbell heeft een van de heerlijkste falset- stemmen in de reggae en is een geducht hitmaker. Bij Studio 1, wieg van de reggae, maakt hij faam met de parel “Queen of The minstrel”. Hij drapeert zijn stem over prachtsongs als “Natty dread in a greenwich farm”,”Bandulu” en “Gorgon speaks”.
Prince Jazzbo ' is de buitenissige “broer” van U Roy en Dennis. Deze oertoaster is gezegend met een larger than life personage en een gezinsportie humor. Zijn debuut “Choice of Version” op Studio 1 is een vijfsterrenplaat en “Ital Corner” met Lee Perry een meesterwerkje.Jah Mali is een gepassioneerde zanger maar wordt zwaar onderschat. Zijn debuut : “El Shaddai” is een diamantje, vol met eigen composities als de Real Issues en Politics .
Sister Carol aka The Black Cinderella is een straffe dame die zich niet laat verbannen naar de achtergrond koortjes.Sister Carol laat zich vooral opmerken door eigen visie. Haar eerste “Lyrically Potent” wordt voor een grammy genomineerd. Duiveltje-doet-al ook want haar bekendheid levert haar rollen op in de films “Married to the Mob”, naast Michelle Pfeifer, en “Something Wild”.
Extra gasten zijn Empress Ayoela , een jonge en beloftevolle Bobo-artieste en Ricky Chaplin , de broer van bekendere reggae artiest Charlie Chaplin.
De 18 inch corner ( vrijdag van 18.00 u. tot 03.00 u. en zaterdag van 14.00 u tot 17.00 u en van 02.00 tot 04.00 u) Dit dubstage in het bos was vorig jaar een absoluut succes. Hier gaat het er meer rootsy aan toe. Op vrijdag zijn er dit jaar twee super-soundsystems te gast: Jah Tubbys Worldsystem en Channel 1. Beiden brengen elk hun eigen indrukwekkend Sound-PA-System mee. De naam, 18Inch corner komt van de grootte van de woofers waarmee de soundsystems zijn uitgerust. Kortom verwacht je aan basniveau dat de vers gestreken plooien in je broek er zo weer uitblaast.
Op zaterdag staan daar vanaf 14.00 u het Mafia & Fluxy soundsystem feat U Brown . Dat is meteen een prémière want het is de eerste keer dat dit in Jamaicaanse studio's zeer gewilde muzikanten- en producersduo zich aan soundsystem waagt. Afronden doen Soul remedyfeat Dread Presure, Ashanti 3000 en Kenny special guest Earl 16.
Er wordt zaterdag gespeeld op de Soul Remedy set, het eerste zelf gebouwde Belgische soundsystem. De Bounce dancehall staat zoals van ouds in het teken van bashment en party vibes.Daar zorgen de volgden acts voor.Op vrijdag (18.00u tot 03.00 u.)Soundquake is één van de beste Duitse Soundsystems en behoort dus sowieso tot de Europese top.Metromedia is wat mijn noemt a year to year sound. Samen met Stone Love en Kilamanjaro een van de weinige overlevers uit hun tijdperk. Daar zal de in charisma gedoopte SkyJuice voor iets tussenzitten.
Op zaterdag (14.00 u tot 04.00 u):De Beljam soundsystem showcase. Civalizee wint de benelux cup, Far West laat in Parijs de Fransen, Zwitsers en Duitsers alle hoeken van keet zien. In het Franse reggaeblad zit een cd van met mixes van Belgische soundsystems; het gaat dus goed met de Belgische scène. Daarom vrijdag en zaterdag in Bounce een greep van nieuw naar gevestigd : players : Bong – Uphill – Civalizee –Tlp & Dors –North Venice Crew – Nsg – Ivory – Skylarking – Original Red Alert, e.a.

THIS WEEKEND: 1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY
So, we are officially 1 year old. What began as a small party on the cocktail evenings thrown on thursdaynight in the Acu, turned into a big night for the Acu and made ELEPHANT SOUNDSYSTEM a name to reckon with. Visitor rates went amazingly fast from 20 to 100 and a couple of times we even had to flag the "sold out" sign! Thanks to you we now have a monthly party that is eagerly awaited by both fans as residents: Count Ozzie, Smartin and Cold Sweat .
We celebrate our anniversary together with some special friends: SIDEBURN SOUNDSYSTEM and JOHN KAYONGO. Sideburn were our guests many times before and they know how to lock down a party. Get ready for some serious riddim droppin', because these guys flip faster than their shadow.
John Kayongo is the resident dj for the Simba Ngoma party in Ekko and recently started a new african dance night in the Rasa. Originally coming from Kenya, this is a guy with a wide perspective on music, but tonight he'll bring you the finest in reggae.
Unfortunately, Elephant resident Smartin will be AWOL tonight, but Cold Sweat and Count Ozzie will try everything in their power to make up for this loss.
Anyhow, it'll be a good night! Cha, what did you expect?
