Thur Feb 28: High Tone @ Ekko

Dat Fransen met even relaxede als opzwepende dub opperbest raad weten, was ons dankzij Le Peuple de l'Herbe al duidelijk. High Tone toont zich de laatste jaren het meest dope jongentje van de dubklas. Ze kregen de nalatenschap van King Tubby en Lee "Scratch" Perry met de paplepel ingegoten en het collectief tekende niet voor niets voor de verzamelaar "Reprocessed #1". Daarop remixen ze onder meer Le Peuple en Hybridsoundsystem, check: reprocessed.free.fr en je zweeft zo van je sofa af. Nog niet helemaal relaxed of opgepept? Probeer dan zentone.free.fr voor nog zo'n ijzersterk staaltje: hun samenwerking met Zenzile.High Tone gaat soms verder waar Le Peuple afhaakt. Zo is het kwintet uit Lyon vaak rauwer en dansbaarder dan hun bekende landgenoten. De "tovenaars van de dub-alchemie" creëren met vinyl-sampling, live-instrumenten, bizarre geluidseffecten en wild scratchwerk een meesterlijke mix van progressieve en jaren '70 dub, hiphop, drum 'n' bass, techno en wereldmuziek. De groep integreert soepeltjes hun Franse, Indiase, Tibetaanse en Jamaicaanse invloeden. En The Wire noemt ze niet voor niets "het Gallische equivalent van Asian Dub Foundation"! Hadden we al verteld dat licht en video een belangrijk onderdeel van de High Tone-show vormen?

Sun Feb 24: Don Carlos @ Tivoli de Helling

De Jamaicaanse reggaezanger Don Carlos draait al meer dan veertig jaar mee. In 1965 zette hij zijn eerste stappen op het rood-geel-groene reggaepad als solozanger, maar zijn carrière nam pas echt een vlucht toen hij in 1973 bij het trio Black Uhuru kwam. Carlos had een groot aandeel in de productie van het legendarische Black Uhuru-album Love Crisis, later heruitgebracht als Black Sounds Of Freedom. Don Carlos stopt waarschijnlijk pas met optreden als hij erbij neervalt, dus ook in 2008 tourt deze veteraan met zijn band Dub Vision de wereld rond alsof hij nog maar twintig is.
