New Reggae Releases on Pressure Sounds

The mighty Pressure Sounds label strikes again with two upcoming reggae releases:

First up is Delroy Wilson's album Dub Plate Style (release date 8th August 2009), a collection of Delroy Wilson tunes from 1978 produced by Bunny Lee, but remixed by King Jammy at King Tubby's. Most of the songs you might have heard, but according to the people at Pressure Sounds, these Jammy mixes really make the difference...and I quote: A little rawer.... A little sparser....alittle heavier....and much, much deeper…

The next release is planned for Sept 19th, and is called Sound System International by King Tubby & The Dynamites. Early King Tubby dubs from tunes by The Dynamites, as produced by Clancy Eccles. New reggae release: Queen Ifrica - Welcome To Montego Bay (VP, 2009)

One of the top conscious female reggae stars of the moment, Queen Ifrica has released her second album (on cd and vinyl, although with a different tracklist) last month on VP records. Last years debut, called Fyah Mumma was already a strong album, including the big hit Below the Waist, and this new recording brings us more massive cultural reggae tunes. Born Ventrice Morgan (Daughter to Jamaican Legend Derrick Morgan), began her career in 1995 after shining at a local talent contest in her hometown of Montego Bay, Jamaica. This led to major stage performances in her country including the esteemed Reggae Sumfest as well as a union with Tony Rebel's Flames Crew in 1998. The new album, Welcome to Montego Bay features 13 songs (14 on vinyl), mixing spiritual anthems, lover's rock tunes and social commentaries. Including her hit tune about child molestation Daddy (produced by Kemar McGregor). Althoughy my lock it down-buddy CS really dislikes this new album, the tunes Don't Sign (Moviestar riddim, produced by Donovan Germain) and Keep it to Yourself (Secrets riddim, produced by Donovan Bennet) work pretty ok for me.......(But yeh..it doesn't get as good as on Fyah Mumma....)

New Pressure Sounds release: Treasure Isle's Pleasure Dub 1974

The folks at Pressure Sounds drop another dub bomb, check out this classic set! Duke Reid died from cancer in 1974 and his nephew, Errol Brown, who had been a junior engineer at Treasure Isle and who would go on to become one of the key engineers at Bob Marley's Tuff Gong Studio, took over the studio controls. He mixed three dub albums at Treasure Isle that dressed down and dubbed up some of the best of the Bond Street catalogue. Snatches of the original vocals were woven in and out of mixes that sound as fresh and as vital today as they did when they were first released both in their original sixties incarnations and their seventies counteractions. Treasure Dub Volume One and Treasure Dub Volume Two have been available in various incarnations ever since. However, Pleasure Dub, the best of the set featuring Errol Brown's cuts to rock steady classics such as The Right Track by Phyllis Dillon, The Tide Is High and Riding On A High & Windy Way from The Paragons and Things You Say You Love by The Jamaicans has never been re-pressed since its initial release. In addition to the incredible music, re-mastered to the usual exacting standards, Pressure Sounds have retained the original artwork for the front cover and added an array of fabulous Treasure Isle photographs and graphics assembled alongside detailed sleeve notes that place the music in its proper context. This exciting release, takes you straight to the real roots of the music back to Bond Street and those very first versions.

Joe Gibbs Early Dub Classic: Dub Serial 1973

Greensleeves is re-releasing the first and long lost dub set by one of our alltime favourite producers Joe Gibbs. Originally issued circa 1973 alongside other classic early dub sets including Lee Perry’s Black Board Jungle and Rhythm Shower, Herman Chin-Loy's Aquarius Dub, Randy's Java Dub (mixed by Errol Thompson), Prince Buster’s The Message Dubwise and others. Virtually unheard since that time, it’s a dubhead’s dream come true, with early raw drum and bass cuts to Gibbs’s cut to Satta Massagana, Love Me Girl, Money In My Pocket and the killer cut to He Prayed used by Big Youth for his Foreman Vs Frasier. Spare on the effects, just a bit of echo and reverb and a couple of vicious tape rewinds. If you dig Joe's African Dub chapters, you'll need this album too. Dub Serial can also be found on cd in the boxset Evolution Of Dub Vol.1, also on Greensleeves.

DEZE ZATERDAG!

Deze zaterdag is het weer dik aan! Naast uw vertrouwde leveranciers van dikke roots, vlammende dancehall, opruiende jungle en alles wat zich ertussen begeeft, hebben we weer een aantal internationale gasten voor je in petto.

Uit Italie afkomstig, maar al tijden rondzwervend door Europa komt Manjah Fyah. Een selecter met, net als de Elephants, een voorliefde voor de ouderwetse 7" single en juggling. Manjah is de drijvende kracht achter 90 Degree (het soundsystem en het label.)

Op de mic wordt hij bijgestaan door de uit Roemenie afkomstige mc General Trix, die de meest diverse flows van topkwaliteit uit zijn mouw schudt alsof het niets is. Denk aan een kruising tussen Gentleman en TopCat..zoiets. Lekker!

Ook op de mic: de uit Ghana afkomstige Osagyefo, die met zijn rootsy en laidback manier van zingen voor die heerlijke afrikaanse saus zorgt.

Samen vormen ze 90 Degree Sound en dat, dat is dik aan! We schreven het al..

THE SOUND OF THE ELEPHANT @ LATIN AMERICAN FILM FESTIVAL

ELEPHANT SOUNDSYSTEM is dit jaar uitgenodigd om te komen draaien op het LAFF. Wij zullen op zaterdag 9 mei vanaf 22.00 uur draaien in de cocktailbar van het Louis Hartlooper Compplex in Utrecht. Diezelfde avond draait er een film waarbij een carribische soundtrack goed leek te passen, daarom leek het de organisatie een goed plan om ons te vragen om van die overheerlijke jamaicaanse reggae muziek te komen draaien! :-)

Vanaf 22.00 uur tot 02.00 uur vette vibez, irie visuals (malu sin) & overheerlijke cocktails aan de bar!!!

LATIN AMERICAN FILM FESTIVAL:
Het Latin American Film Festival (LAFF) introduceert en presenteert jaarlijks het werk van (nieuwe) filmmakers uit Latijns-Amerika. Naast het bieden van een overzicht van de beste films en documentaires van het afgelopen jaar, biedt het LAFF een overzicht van de culturele en maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen van dit continent in een uitgebreid verdiepingsprogramma.

Het LAFF is in 2005 opgericht door Judith van den Burg en Jessica de Jaeger. In de afgelopen vijf jaar is het LAFF uitgegroeid van een klein overzichtsfestival tot een succesvol middelgroot festival en kennisnetwerk op het gebied van Latijns-Amerikaanse film en cultuur. Het programma van het LAFF werd in de loop der jaren uitgebreid met een educatieprogramma.

Al meer dan drie decennia zijn The Gladiators een drijvende kracht in de Jamaicaanse muziekscene. Deze legendarische band rondom Albert Griffiths werd geformeerd in 1967. Alle grootheden uit de Jamaicaanse scene hebben ze zien gaan en zien komen. Zelf blijven ze waar ze zijn, in wisselende bezettingen weliswaar, in het hart van de reggaescene van Jamaica. The Gladiators staat voor onvervalste en onversneden rootsreggae van het zuiverste water. Elephant Soundsystem zal de tunes voor en na het concert gaan verzorgen! Dit is je kans om de nieuwe zaal Luxor in Arnhem te zien......

Essential Pressure Sounds Release for DubHeads : Jimmy Radway’s 1975 Dub I

According to our Rough Guide To Reggae, Jimmy Radway's Dub I is one of the heaviest dub albums ever released. And, as usual, the're right. Former painter and political gunman Ivan Jimmy “One Foot” Radway (born Kingston, 1947) recorded a bunch of wicked tunes in the early seventies for his Capricorn and Fe Me Time labels. He gets his first hit with Errol Dunkley’s Black Cinderella in 1972, written by Radway himself. He returns to the charts in 1973 with Leroy Smart’s Mother Liza, and releases several other tunes with deejays I Roy, Big Youth and Scotty. By 1975, he also did an entire dub album, filled with the tough riddims of his earlier tunes, all mixed in a day by mixing desk wizard Errol T at Joe Gibbs. A the time only 300 copies were pressed (the Micron label had folded), making it a sought-after item on the collecter’s market. Adding to the mystery, the album carries many different names such as Dub I, Micron Dub, Hug a Dub, Dubwise Shower and Fe Mi dub. Now, this mythical dub album gets a proper re-release in his original sleeve by Pressure Sounds, who again deserve praise for their work in uncovering Jamaican gems. No tricks here, the horns with lots of echo, the basslines with lots of crunch, heavy and grim dub, reflecting the dark and violent circumstances of Kingston’s ghettos at the time. Dub versions to afore mentioned Black Cinderella (and its deejay and melodica cuts from Big Youth, I Roy and Augustus Pablo) and Mother Liza, plus dubs of Scotty Bells’ Black Am I, Leroy Smart’s Happiness Is My Desire and Desmond Young’s (later known as Desi Roots) awesome original cut Warning, toasted by Big Youth as Wolf In Sheep’s Clothin. Radway also recut Glen Brown’s Slaving as Wicked Have To Feel It. Musicians include Jamaica’s finest session players: Carlton and Aston Barret, Alva Lewis, Tyrone Downie, Bobby Ellis, Vincent Gordon, Dirty Harry, Tommy McCook and the mighty Cedric “Im” Brooks. His vocal work of the early seventies can be found on the Keep the Pressure Down compilation on Prestige records, recorded at Randys and Dynamics 1972-1976. After the Dub I album, Radway decided to quit the music business and retired to the countryside. By 1996 he was down on his luck living in Ocho Rios, unable to afford a mobile phone. Hopefully this beautifull re-issue will get him some more of the attention and financial reward he deserves.

This highly succesfull dubstep producer and -30 label owner released a blazing mixtape with some very hot forthcoming releases and dubplates in it. Surely it's worth downloading for the Public Enemy dubplate alone, but the rest is way up to par. A very nice mix containing oldies, goodies, beauties and even some charming fuck ups: this is Cotti. You gotta love it!

High Tone is terug in de Ekko! Na dat verplaatste en véél te korte concert in februari hebben we wat goed te maken. Dus vanavond, gegarandeerd, in EKKO, een 2,5 uur lange set dikke dub van High Tone! Na het experimentele uitstapje op 'Wave Digger' doen de Franse meesters sinds het vorig jaar verschenen 'Underground Wobble' weer waar ze écht goed in zijn; het creëeren van dub met onderhuids borrelende oriëntaalse invloeden, rock, hip-hop en electro. Sample-tovenaar en scratch-virtuoos DJ Twelve voegt daar nog wat flarden filmmuziek aan toe, en maakt er met de rest van de live-band een super relaxed geheel van.

Dj's Smartin en Cold Sweat vullen de avond in met dikke, likkebaardend lekkere dubsounds. Jummy!

REST IN PEACE MR. ROCKSTEADY

Rocksteadyster en reaggaepionier Alton Ellis is afgelopen vrijdag in Londen overleden. Zijn familie wil verder geen details naar buiten brengen, maar het was al langer bekend dat de 70-jarige Ellis in het ziekenhuis lag vanwege kanker.

Ellis maakte voor het eerst furore buiten zijn thuisland Jamaica in de laten jaren '50 en vroege jaren '60. Ellis vond zijn ware roeping echter in de rocksteady beweging en vond volgens sommigen zelfs het subgenre uit met zijn hit 'Get Ready -- Rock Steady".

Gedesillusioneerd door de corrupte Jamaicaanse muziekbusiness, en misschien ook wel moe om overschaduwd te worden door Bob Marley, verhuisde Ellis in 1973 naar Engeland. Daar begon hij zijn Alltone label en ging verder met opnemen en produceren.

THE BUG _ London Zoo

Bugbrein Kevin Martin is bepaald geen groentje en staat bekend als muzikale allesvreter.
De baardmans heeft z'n vingers in Godflesh, Techno Animal, ICE, King Midas Sound, Ladybug en zo nog een hele rits underground namen. Maar met zijn derde album als The Bug bereikt Martin nieuwe hoogtes.
In de overbevolkte kooien op London Zoo buitelen grime, dubstep, ragga en reggae in een wilde dans over elkaar heen, terwijl een heel legertje MC's en toasters daar brullend in een kring omheen staat. Martin heeft de gave om precies de juiste stemmen bij zijn pikzwarte vibes te vinden, iets waar Massive Attack en 4 Hero ook altijd in uitblinken. The Bug koos Ricky Ranking van Roots Manuva voor het bumpy ragganummer 'Murder', reggaelegende Tippa Irie voor het apocalyptische openingsnummer 'Angry' en de energieke Warrior Queen op het dansvloerbommetje 'Poison Dart'.
De beats mogen dan uitnodigen tot bewegen, ze staan immer in dienst van de vocalisten die The Bug in zijn studio lokt. Hun teksten zijn kritisch, cryptisch en duister. "America is a big superpower / They should have been there within the hour" zingt Tippa Irie over de misser van Bush ten tijde van orkaan Katrina. Al is er ook ruimte voor humor, zo bewijzen Killa P & Flowdan met 'Skeng': "Evol ... Worse ... Nurse ... Hearse" klinkt het in moddervet patois-accent.
Dit pittige kevertje nestelt zich onder de huid en injecteert een hardnekkig, goedaardig virus dat een aanslag doet op je heupen. Je zult veel moeite moeten doen om momenteel een opwindender en verslavender dansalbum te vinden dan London Zoo.

Eigenlijk moeten we hem maar eens Jim Cliff gaan noemen, want Jimmy Cliff is dit jaar zestig geworden. Gelukkig gaat deze beroemdste nog levende reggaezanger niet met de VUT, integendeel, hij gaat op tournee! Voor een reggaezanger heeft Jimmy Cliff veel hits gehad: tien keer haalde hij de Top-40, met als bekendste nummers Reggae Night, Wild World en Sunshine In The Music. Ook als acteur had hij succes - de oudere muziekliefhebber herinnert zich nog de film (en het nummer) The Harder They Come. Met Cliffs fluwelen stem en zijn grote repertoire wordt dit het ideale zomeravondconcert!
